Eleven-year-old Melody is not like most people. She can’t walk. She can’t talk. She can’t write. All. Mrs. Lovelace punishes Molly and Claire by making them stand for the rest of the class for being rude to Melody and the other students with disabilities. Mrs. Lovelace then plays a few songs.
Gloria, Willy, and Maria all love it, and Melody’s synesthesia has her seeing green, which means the music is very good. Mrs. Lovelace has students from the fifth-grade partner with students from Melody. This book deals with very hard facts of life in a compelling way that makes you reflect and think on your own life.
I highly recommend this book. My students have gasped and shouted in outrage when they feel the main character, Melody, has been wronged. They've laughed and chuckled at the beautiful imagery this author has created.4/5. Out of My Mind begins when Melody is a baby, and her Mom and Dad notice she can’t hold toys on her own, or sit up without falling over.
But while Melody’s body isn’t developing the way it was supposed to, her mind is growing quickly. Out of My Mind is a wonderful book that whenever given a chance, I would definitely recommend.
